Three new NCSU Libraries Fellows begin their appointments this summer

The NC State University Libraries welcomes the 2020-2022 class of NCSU Libraries Fellows. Claire Cahoon will begin her fellowship in July, and Shelly Black and Katharine Frazier will begin in August.

The NCSU Libraries Fellows Program develops future leaders for academic libraries, with a focus on science, engineering, and digital librarianship, on diversity, and on library management. Since its inception in 1999, the Fellows program has attracted an impressive group of talented new graduates from universities throughout North America. Fellows are appointed for a two-year term as members of the library faculty, combining an assignment on an initiative of strategic importance with an appointment in a home department.

After receiving the Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Arizona this August, Shelly Black will join the Special Collections Research Center, and her initiative, "Capturing the Experience of the NC State University Libraries’ High-Tech Spaces," will be based in the Research Engagement department.

Black currently serves as a Digital Marketing Specialist at the University of Arizona Libraries, where she produces content for an e-newsletter, social media, and the library website, and designs graphics for print and online collateral. She authored the library’s first social media policy and does photography at library events. She has also been a Digital Archives Intern at the Azusa Pacific University Libraries. Black has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography with a minor in Japanese from the University of Arizona. She has been selected for the 2020 American Library Association (ALA) Emerging Leaders program.

Black will be the Cyma Rubin Library Fellow for 2020. Cyma Rubin, past president of the Friends of the Library and holder of an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from NC State, is an award-winning producer of musicals, documentaries, and exhibitions, whose endowment helps support recruitment and professional development for the named Fellow.

After receiving a Master of Science in Information Science from UNC-Chapel Hill this May, Claire Cahoon will join the Data & Visualization Services department, and her initiative, “Spatial-Visual Development for Engineering Students,” will be based in Research Engagement.

Cahoon currently serves as a Carolina Academic Library Associate (CALA) at the UNC-CH University Libraries, where she teaches sessions on information literacy and research skills and leads workshops on digital humanities and digital pedagogy. Cahoon also helps facilitate the Digital Pedagogy Community of Practice and serves as project manager for the Triangle Digital Humanities Network (TDHN), for which she plans and coordinates the Triangle Digital Humanities Institute unconference events. She has worked as a Community Workshop Series Volunteer at the Orange County and Durham Public Libraries. Cahoon has a Bachelor of Arts in English with minors in Art History and Web Programming from Ithaca College.

After receiving a Master of Library and Information Science from UNC-Greensboro this August, Katharine Frazier will join the User Experience department, and her initiative, “Developing a Research Data Curation Service,” will be based in Digital Library Initiatives.

Frazier currently serves as a University Library Technician at the NC State University Libraries, working in the Collections & Research Strategy department. She helps develop a responsive research collection by monitoring local, national, and international collections news and trends in areas including open access models, transformative journal licensing, and inclusive collections. She also supports collection management activities by managing Demand-Driven Acquisition and Books-By-Request programs and purchasing student and faculty monograph requests. She was previously an Asset Management Technician at the UNC-CH University Libraries. Frazier has a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from UNC-Chapel Hill.
